Designed by Lockheed Martin, this aircraft participated in the Joint Strike Fighter program (JSF) during the 90's, specifically beginning in 1993. During this competition, the X-35 rivaled Boeing's aircraft design, the X-32. By 2001, the X-35 was awarded the contract, and what is known now as the F-35 Lightning II was put into production.
