The SR-71 is notorious for the ridiculous speed it demonstrated during its service. Designed as a strategic reconnaissance aircraft, the jet needed to, quite literally, outrun enemy detection and missiles. This it achieved, and the Blackbird remains one of the most successful aeronautical endeavors to this day.
